Tolumnias, used to be called Equitant oncidiums, are true miniatures. Tolumnias are native to the carribean region and usually have flowers not more than 1cm large and looks very much like miniature Oncidiums. Their colour ranges from white to brown, yellow to purple, and thus is also one of the main source of colours of the many Oncidumnia hybrids today. Tolumnias are ideal as tabletop plants due to their small stature and bright colours.

The Tolumnia that we house has a unique characteristic. Their petals changes colours as they mature. Notice that in the pictures, the newly opened petals are yellow, as they mature, the sides of the petals turn orange. Tolumnia with oncidium hybrids also display this characteristic, but differently. It was observed that newly open petals are entirely yellow and gradually turns white as the petal matures in this Oncidumnia hybrid that we grow.

Tolumnias requires high humdity to grow. These plants are suitable for growing in tropical climate, and will do well in high light intensity. Being epiphytic in nature, thus high drainage media like charcoal is recommended. Misting rather than watering would be preferred by these plant, particularly if you intend to keep them indoors. Overwatering may result in leave rot.

Here at TG, we also house a few other varieties of Oncidiums, Tolumnias & their hybrids. Oncidiums has much large, flat, thin and soft leaves, whilst Tolumnias have smaller, succulent, thick and hardy leaves and their hybrids have something in between.

Yesterday our office was filled with a pleasant sweet scent of bunches of Aeridachnis Bogor ‘Apple Blossoms’. This hybrid of (Arachnis hookeriana x Aerides odorata) and was registered by Rev.M.Yamada on the 1st January, 1967 and had a shortlived period in the export history of Singapore. These flowers was initially exported to Australia for the floral auction markets in the 1980s but was phased out shortly as it wasn’t very free flowering.

Aeridachnis Bogor ‘Apple Blossoms’ has a very unique sweet and mild scent, almost similar to that of some rhynchostylis or aerides, but with much longer and larger sprays. The flower themselves start with an apple green from initial budding and matures to a pure white colour with a tinge of pink revealing across its lips. These flowers are very suitable for use as tabletop flower/wedding arrangements as it spruce up the surrounding environment with its unique scent.

As the season for this Aeridachnis is coming to a close shortly, the flowers were all harvested. Do let me know if any of you are interested in this orchid and I will contact you during its next flowering season, however orders will be limited as we currently only have a relatively small stock of these plants. We only sell the cut flowers of this plants at the moment.

There are a few variation of this mutation’s green stripes and also known to be called as the ‘Lollipop’ orchid. This variety is more sought by hobbist and for its cut flowers than the plant as it tends to be easily diseased by tobacco mosaic virus resulting in black spotted leaves.
